How to see the Art Trail in a weekend
South side – Saturday
Start at Spike Island and visit the Spike Print Studios and the Spike Island Gallery. From here, either catch a ferry from Baltic Wharf or The Cottage across to the Pumphouse in Hotwells or walk along the harbour to the Create Centre (10-15 mins) for our group show and special 'Local Views' show. Hungry? A snack or early lunch can be enjoyed at Lockside, Howards or the Nova Scotia. Cross the swing-bridge to the 'Island' and visit Sandford Road and Oldfield Road, then round the corner to Hotwell Road for ‘Hair Art’ at Sui Generis and a show at the Natural Smile. Refresh at The Bear or the Merchants Arms, then wander west along Hotwell Road to check out the stunning Gorge and Pete's piece. Visit no.390, and from here you can either head up the Zig-Zag to come out by the Suspension Bridge, or we recommend walking up Freeland Place and along to Albermarle Row and Hotwells Primary School opposite for a beautiful exhibition of children's work. Next, stop at the Hope Community Church (formerly Hope Centre) hosting a diverse exhibition plus an activity room for kids and tea, coffee and cakes!
Now, back down Hope Chapel Hill, take a left for the attractions of Dowry Square, and then along the Hotwell Road to Ambra Vale and Ambrose Road. Back down again too! Otherwise, from Hope Community Church head up through the Polygon towards Goldney Avenue, then down Goldney Lane, turning left into Goldney Road. Carry on down the steps, up Ambrose Road, passing The Lion Pub (if you can resist), up Church Lane to Glentworth Road and back down to Cliftonwood Terrrace. Then it's down the steps to catch a Cross Harbour Ferry to the SS Great Britain. An alternative would be to continue along the Hotwell Road to Jacobs Wells Road, with its access to Brandon Hill. Head towards the Cabot Tower to arrive in Berkeley Square and the Queens Road area. From here it's a short walk to Meridian Place.
North Side – Sunday
Take a number 41, 54 or 1 bus up to the top of Blackboy Hill and visit both sides of the Whiteladies Road. We suggest you start at Burlington Road and then take a left into Lower Redland Road to find Redland Terrace on the right. Go back onto Blackboy Hill and stroll up to the Downs where you turn left into Upper Belgrave Road. Turn into Worrall Road and branch off to visit Wellington Park Road. Then track back to Hughenden Road and Downfield Road.
Next take a left down Pembroke Road and first right into Guthrie Road. First right again and you are in the Avenue and the show at the Hornby Centre, Clifton College. Head past the back of Bristol Zoo and turn right into College Road and left onto Cecil Road. First left takes you to College Fields, then Clifton Park Road, with Harley Place round the corner to the right.
At this point you may wish to head for the heart of Clifton Village with its choice of cafes, bars and restaurants for refreshment. Alternatively, make for the beautiful Christchurch and its Primary School and then turn into Lansdown Road. Take a left to visit the Bristol China Factory at the bottom of Vyvyan Road, and then Royal Park. From here head into Victoria Square and then you can either access Boyce's Avenue through the arch or you can go round via Merchants Road.
Once in Clifton Village you have the Primrose Cafe in Boyce's Avenue. Then you could cross Clifton Down Road into Princess Victoria Street and head up The Mall for the Deli, Boston Tea Party, The Clifton Club and the Mall pub. From the Mall pub take a left at the T-junction and bear left for Sion Hill and Sion Lane. Keep following Sion Hill round till you come to Princess Victoria Street. After visiting the Village Pottery on your left, keep going to the other end of PV Street and then take two rights to arrive at the stunning Royal York Crescent.
Trail completed!
